My parents live a couple hours away from me in the countryside surrounded by
farm fields and orchards. I love to go visit when I can
and I always bring Millie with me to visit little Sherman. That's my mom's
puppy and he's such a cutie. Millie and Sherman are like best buddies
and they love to munch on things and play in the yard and bite one another.
It's super cute. So today I'm gonna help my mom with a
really exciting DIY project in her house and also give you a little sneak peek
of some of her amazing thrifted finds over the years.
Hey everyone. I finally did it and I got us into my mom's house so we can snoop
around and see all of her cool stuff.
I found these pictures. There's two of them and there
I found these in an estate sale. They were in back of a door and no one was
looking at it. It was like a door was open and it was
hidden in back of the open door and there was two of them and I got them
for twelve dollars. These are watercolors by Stark Davis. I
heard he's supposed to be famous so someday
when I get when I want to when I die soon I get
some money. Mom. So I got two of these. And they were
already framed right? Yeah they were already framed. Everything was pretty.
So those beautiful parrot pictures that my mom found at the estate sale
will pair so nicely with the amazing wall mural we're about to create.
This part of the DIY is kind of funny because I'm going to be cutting
this foam board that we picked up at the hardware store
with a meat carver. It's like an electrolyzed
electrolyzed electric knife or turkey carver.
My parents were really proud of this thing. They picked it up for only three
dollars at an estate sale and it's actually quite perfect for
simple DIY projects. After cutting the styrofoam board to size
we then came back into the house to be sure that each of the panels would
fit on top of them. Dry fitting before you
glue down is always a good idea. My mom was getting
really excited after we laid these out seeing how it's all gonna look and come
into place. Next we just brushed on a simple
universal pre-mixed wallpaper adhesive. Getting one that's pre-mixed like this
makes it really simple and easy to use for any kind of wallpaper
I had a dream last night I was going to use a make frame around our new mural on
the wall and we were going to use store-bought
wood and it was kind of like white and looking too
perfect. So I have this bamboo plant growing in my yard
and I always have to trim the dead ones out and I thought well I'll come out
here and trim the dead ones out. Then we just brushed them off and make a
frame out of the natural bamboo that I grew.
That way I'll have a homemade mural. Every spring you just cut out the dead
part and I save these the dead parts because I put in like for
beans to crawl up in my garden or I put it like with my hollyhocks.
It's good to stake your hollyhocks because they're so limber and
whippy around and Selena can use them on her peonies
because they get kind of top heavy and I just save these and I always get
like about 30 big sticks every year. You excited? Excited.
Next my mom and dad cut off all the little nubs on the bamboo that way it
would lay nicely against the mural and the wall itself.
Afterwards we all made our way to the patio and I drew a little diagram of the
panels going on the wall and we all debated the
measurements of the actual bamboo. So rather than going out
and doing a double measurement no no no no we like to argue about it in our
family.
That's why I always like having a chair between us. Cut into mom.
Cut some of the fat. Bamboo is a very dense wood so before you nail into it
you're gonna have to pre-drill your holes.
Probably would have been a good idea to use a sawhorse here but
mom and I just kind of like to wing it.
Things are really starting to get exciting and look beautiful so stay
tuned for the end of the video for the full reveal.
Most of my stuff is wood so if you have ugly masks
or neat wood carvings you want to get rid of. She's your girl.
I've been slinging that picture. Yeah you like the uglier the better.
The more unique the better. More scrolly carved teeth hanging out and all
kinds of stuff like that. I love New Guinea art and I love
African art. New Guinea's about my favorite because they really get into
some ugly ones. Yeah those are cool. This plant has been
with me for about 20 years. It grew clear to the ceiling. It is
probably about 20 feet tall if they had it all wrapped around everywhere and I
got tired of like cleaning the leaves of a pie so I cut it
in half about three times and I just keep cut
it in half and I poke it in the ground and I water it like once a month.
That loves me. Didn't you get that when you and dad first got married?
I think I got about the first or second year of getting married. It's been here a
long time. I mean every time we move it loses
all its leaves because I have to find the right
area for it to be in and it doesn't it likes to be where light is but it
doesn't want to be in the light but if you the philodendron if you
want a party plant because I'm not really a
be nice to my plants I'm kind of like like them to grow and I don't baby them
I just like them to grow. Then I got you that
tray right there. Yeah that's the tray sling that got me that
right there on my coffee table right in front of me.
What in the world? This is awesome. This is really cool.
Oh my gosh. Look at this stuff. It's $12.99.
Horns on it and everything. It's kind of cool to put candles in. For a while I had
it on my kitchen table. I had apples and oranges and bananas in
it. Let's do a fruit salad. That would be amazing. We like eating.
Yeah we do. We just take a good stuff to eat. It's almost dinner time. We're
getting hungry. She's always told me that she wanted to
come to my house and I'm kind of a more of a private person
than her. I kind of shy away from cameras. Now like 30,000 people.
What do you think the most valuable thing you've ever found at a garage sale
or an estate sale would be? When we first moved here, Selene and I
went to a barn sale and it was an estate sale and we were
digging around in the barn and we seen the
legs or the arms of the chair poking out but we couldn't see the
whole lot set and all of a sudden we kept digging in there and moving blankets and
feed bags and everything. It was like burying a newspaper. It was like a
terrible looking place. A real barn sale. Pooping everything in it.
We dug it out and then we pulled it out and it was like two chairs and a
really nice couch and it was carpet furniture and
the leather was good except the seat when the mice got to the seat so
all we did is I just took it into an upholstery
shop and just had them put new seats because the backs are good
and the springs were all good. It was just the seats where the
mice got to it. What was neat about those chairs like
old upholstery they would stuff them with horse hair back in the day so where
we could see where the seat was damaged you can see
how they do it with the batting and then the horse hair on top.
Big straps across there. It was like really well made.
Remember coming around the corner we were like oh yeah we just got this like
furniture set and dad's like what did you buy?
How are we gonna get that home? It's heavy too.
I think I've had maybe 30 couches. I always go to a state sale and see a
better one you know it's like oh then I'll sell mine on marketplace
yeah and I'll get rid of mine I'll get another one you know as long as I had it
a year I always think well I've got a year's worth of use out of it.
That's her favorite place by the way now that I told her about Facebook
marketplace she's on there every day looking for stuff.
I don't even look at Facebook anymore I think I just go
straight to marketplace. I get it in the morning and I get it before I go to bed.
Geez you're hard core. Remember you're all like do I even like
need Facebook? Can I just have marketplace? I don't even want to look at
all these other people. Yeah I don't I don't ever talk to
anybody I just I just wish I just had to get a
marketplace site that's all. Just show me the junk huh? Yeah show me
your junk. I don't want that kind.
I have my didgeridoo stick in here and my rain maker.
That's that's kind of fun to do because I live out in the country so in the
summertime I kind of want the garden to blow around.
Call the rain to your garden? Yeah call the rain
you know whatever usually I get a bunch of birds or something squawking and I
Oh are you sitting up here sharing me? There comes my baby. You don't want dirty feet you
can sit up here. This is my baby his name's Sherman.
Wow he's kind of big boy. Yeah. He's supposed to weigh like 20 pounds but
he kind of weighs almost 30. He meaty. Yeah so you always upgrade right?
You always upgrade because you can always if you like say
these coffee tables only paid $25 I know I can get $25
so I'll just swap even that's perfect I use them for
five years I get my money back. So when I was growing up
my mom would always rearrange the living room like we didn't have a money
a lot of money when I was growing up and you would just go to garage sales
buy a couple cool new things but then you'd like rearrange the whole living
room yeah and then when I got married I did
the same thing too and I still do it now with Pete and he'd be like geez you're
moving around furniture again but now he's used to it because
it's fun. That's right about once a month or once every two months
if you just move your furniture makes you feel happy in your house you don't
even have to you can bring in lamps from the
bedroom move your living room lamps into the bedroom and just to switch out
lamps it kind of makes the whole room have a different vibe and
throw rugs are really good to switch out like if you have one in your bedroom
bring it into the living room throw the living room one into the
bedroom for a while you know. And we trade stuff all the time too.
I end up I go to her house with a car full of stuff usually and I come home
with a car full of stuff we kind of end up trading a lot.
So when we when we trade stuff though basically it's like I really like this
thing but I don't really have room or a place for it right now
so we give it to each other we go but don't get rid of this thing. We say is
this a keeper thing or is this the thing I can get rid of it when I'm done with
it yeah that's how we work. Yeah you got to clarify and if it is a
keeper like don't get rid of it you have to get it back.
Then when I'm tired of you and if I she don't want it back and it's a keeper
Oh
I got this at the Engelberg sale that Selina invited me to that was out at
Mt. Angel and it's a really cool it has
cabochons all the way around it and it's really heavy it's like
copper I think and I don't I don't know what it is.
So does anybody know what this is? To me it looked like it should be a lamp
There's a place to have a finial here but I don't know what it is it's kind of
pretty I just didn't know what to do with it so I put my kindling in it
but in the summer you can put your candles in there mom that'd look really
pretty. Yeah or a potted plant I thought oh you know
like at Christmas time maybe I'd put a poinsettia in there or something. Oh you
could put it on top of your carved cabinet with like a
climbing plant or something. I got this from an estate sale that was back in the
old days when we had an old tv would go in there like back
in the 90s when we had the big tvs for flat screens came in
that was like my um I was this was a 1930s
thing that was kind of cool I thought I would
collecting yeah because now you don't have the tv now it's like a big old
ice or out here in the front yeah and this one's an old one too this one
was one of my fun collections I found this one was what like a 1930s
the headhunter he came from Africa
the boss gets to have a break don't you love
three flowers from your yard three flowers from a yard
my legs are tired from going up and down on that ladder
mine are tired from kneeling down on the floor three o'clock and you didn't even
give me lunch she's cheap labor who didn't even feed
her I don't know you guys were working and
this looks cool yeah I think that's I can't remember the name of that one
I think it's variegated then I have golden and I have
variegated and I got curly I don't really wear that much
jewelry anymore because I always end in the yard doing yard work
look at all these daffodils oh how cute is that
help me and we worked on this for four hours today
and uh we this is the bamboo out of my yard I went out and chopped out of a
plant okay you want to sit at the table with me
we can talk a little bit let's get my wine glass I can't drink wine but I'm not
I'm doing nice tea so my mom got those beautiful pictures
from the estate sale of those tropical parrots and they're so
beautiful and colorful and I love them so much
since my mom has like a lot of brown and stuff around the house
I came over and it popped some color on the wall so we painted her entire
kitchen and this wall where the dining area is
this really vibrant pretty green and then we worked on the mural how do
you feel today yeah we're tired today I'll tell you I
am I'm getting kind of old I think it's
pretty I I like it when I sit in the living room and look in here it makes me
happy to look at birds and stuff yeah do you do like I
do like when you redo a room you keep walking by and staring oh well I like to
walk down the hall and then come in here and like by the way
you know just say oh wow oh lovely that looks lovely I compliment myself
yeah that's important you would encourage yourself
wow that was a good job she wasn't it's kind of fun to do this and I'm glad
Selena comes down I live quite a ways from her so we don't
see each other that often about once a month
I know that's I'm trying to move closer and then we can go
do things like this all the time you don't have to have another wall I know
we got to go garage sales and ladies who lunch we can do all the
things every time I go with her she and I have to be their carrier or
something in a state so I she owes me lunch yeah at least I get
to go out for lunch a lot when I be her carry person
or I'll run out of cash and I'm like yeah I'm usually the cash bag mom
can you borrow some money that's true that's a lot
that is out of the Bambi plant I know this tied in really nice because you had
this out in the garden already and it goes with
the whole mural vibe and then this vase is from goodwill I had
this is another example of like giving each other stuff because I have this
at home and my collection of vases from goodwill and then I gave it to mom
yeah now I have it in my house yeah trade stuff
