The Maya Cave
It sounds like the story of an Indiana Jones movie, but it is reality.
In the hidden crevices and corners of the world's largest underwater cave system,
the remains of ancient people and long-extinct animals are lurking.
This is how researchers in the flooded caves of San Actún in Mexico come across a 9,000-year-old human skull.
Archaeologist Guillermo de Anda, who conducts the investigation of the cave,
calls it the most important archaeological underwater site in the world.
While the record-breaking dimensions of the system extend over more than 345 kilometers,
the team around de Anda found that a huge underground cave system called Dos Ojos is connected to San Actún.
Those connected cave systems, on the other hand, contain the bones of extinct animals from the Pleistocene,
including the remains of giant mammals, short-nosed bears and gompoterians, i.e. plant eaters similar to elephants.
It is not yet clear why the bones ended up in this cave system.
It is conceivable that the animals fell into the so-called cenotes, i.e. water holes, and drowned.
But some bones could also have been thrown into the cave together with the rising sea level.
In short, the complex houses almost 200 different archaeological sites,
of which more than half belong to the legendary Mayan civilization.
While the Mayan kingdoms flourished between 2000 B.C. and 1000 A.D., their traces are still not completely uncovered.
It is possible that some human remains were placed in the caves only after death.
Others may have come from ritual sacrifices.
Furthermore, the archaeologists found pottery, works of art and statues here,
which were probably thrown into the cenotes as part of sacred rituals.
And yet, although many breathtaking finds have already been recorded in the cave,
the researchers are sure that they have only uncovered the tip of a much larger archaeological iceberg.
Because in fact, the underwater sites are by far not fully mapped,
which is why no one knows which undiscovered treasures are still lurking there.
Mysterious stone balls.
The work of a lost high culture or just a willful nature?
Since the huge stone ball was discovered in Bosnia,
the experts are puzzled about the true backgrounds of the massive object.
At a diameter of 3.3 meters and an estimated weight of 35 tons,
the ball has attracted many curious visitors over the past few years.
And if we briefly remember the mysterious stone balls from Costa Rica at this point,
it is actually likely that we are dealing with a man-made artifact here.
An assumption that even the archaeologist Semir Osman does not support.
While the huge building is located in a forest near the city of Visoko,
the Bosnian Indiana Jones assumes that it comes from an unknown civilization
that settled in the region over 1,000 years ago.
Furthermore, the reddish-brown color of the ball would indicate a very high iron content.
However, other experts point out that this iron content is typical of a so-called concretion.
In turn, these are mineral aggregates that are formed in a completely natural way.
Atacama mummies.
Have all these heated discussions finally come to an end?
Since the so-called Atacama mummy was found in Chile in 2003 in the infamous desert,
the world public has a central question.
What the hell is that?
After all, one thing is undisputed.
With a size of 13 centimeters, its elongated skull and its strikingly hard bones,
the skeleton looks anything but human.
In this background, some people suspect
that we are actually dealing with the remains of a completely unknown species here.
A species that may not even come from the earth.
However, the scientific DNA examination shows a far more earthly picture.
As a result, the analysis came to the conclusion that the genetic material came from a human.
However, the experts were still not able to explain the bizarre appearance of the Atacama mummy in the following time.
A genome analysis later found a study that found that the skeleton contains a total of seven gene mutations,
all of which influence human growth.
So the researchers assume that the strange appearance is due to the combination of these mutations.
These led, among other things, to premature growth, small growth and severe malformations.
As a result, the supposed alien is probably a dead fetus
or a child who died shortly after birth.
The Viking sword
Every summer, Saga Wanecek travels with her parents and her little brother to Lake Vidderstern in southern Sweden.
While the girl usually builds sand castles or lets stones jump over the water,
a few years ago an accident occurred that made Wanecek a national celebrity overnight.
As Saga went into the water on a bright, beautiful summer day,
she suddenly felt something long and hard on her knee, which protruded from the clayey bottom of the lake.
After she had pulled out the object, she immediately noticed that it was completely different from the sticks and stones she usually finds there.
And look at that!
Saga had just discovered an ancient Viking sword, which amazed the archaeologists who contacted her.
While the sword is estimated to be 1,500 years old, the family was initially asked to keep the exciting find a secret.
The researchers first wanted to make sure that there were other historical treasures lurking in the lake.
And indeed!
Afterwards, the experts were supposed to find a brooch from the Viking era and a coin from the 18th century.
And even if Saga found it a pity that she had to hand over her sword to the local museum,
she was happy that it could now be admired by other people.
A city in the basement.
Old clothes, long-forgotten toys and a grown-up city.
Basement finds are really something exciting.
Yes, you heard right.
In 1963, a man in Turkey made a strange observation.
His chickens kept disappearing through a gap in his basement that had opened up during renovation work.
To find out where his feathered contemporaries had gone, the man tore down a wall and then discovered something incredibly incredible.
The unique basement find has since been known under the name Derinkuyu and describes a colossal underground city.
Located in Cappadocia, the hidden complex is still accompanied by many question marks.
So we don't know exactly who originally built Derinkuyu and why.
Some experts suspect that the city was occupied by the Hittites over 4,000 years ago.
Others estimate that we are dealing with a secret refuge for Christians here.
However, a large part of Derinkuyu is still lurking in the hidden.
Estimates have so far only released 25% of the original complex.
The covered part includes eight floors, whose rooms take up an area of 2,500 square meters.
In addition to living and sleeping quarters, they also house a monastery, a wine press, storage and collection rooms, churches and even a church.
In terms of the number of inhabitants, the estimates of the experts are very different.
While some experts believe that at most 3,000 people lived here at the same time, others consider a population of 50,000.
Locked from the outside world via so-called rolling stone doors, Derinkuyu has a sophisticated ventilation system of over 15,000 shafts.
In fact, the air circulation still works to this day.
In addition, the system was also used for the transport of water.
New from Saqqara
The ancient Egyptian city of Saqqara is always good for new surprises.
A few months ago, the researchers discovered several ancient embalming workshops here,
which give us an amazing insight into the mummification arts of the pharaoh-rich inhabitants.
Established about 2,400 years ago, the cities contain stone beds on which the bodies of the deceased rest during the procedure.
At the ends of the beds, the scientists discovered rings and clay pots, which served to store the inner organs.
In addition, the find also included practical items for embalming, including linen cloths and sodium nitrate.
In order to stop the decay, all moisture was removed from the body during the mummification.
Apparently, one workshop was used for the embalming of animals.
Because as is well known, the Egyptians were known for conserving those animals for the afterlife that they considered sacred.
In addition to cats, for example, there were also ibises and apes.
If you follow the executions of the director of the archaeological site of Saqqara,
this was the first time that embalming workshops were discovered there in connection with temples.
A fact that is clearly different from the previous finds.
So far, such facilities have always been in connection with the deity Apis in Memphis.
As part of a one-year exhibition, the researchers in Saqqara also found two new graves,
which are much older than the embalming workshops.
Thus, the age of the tombs with 4,400 or 3,400 years is enumerated.
It was also possible for the experts to uncover the identity of the buried.
It was two priests named Nehesud Bar and Menkeber.
The other finds include statues and works of art and even some ancient Egyptian cheese.
