Phyllis Wheatley, Langston Hughes, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, all students want to
have fun in the classroom, regardless if it's 33 hours long or 33 minutes.
When I retired, I wanted to learn more about my history and my culture, but I know me.
I don't do things unless there's something on the line, and so I was like, well, I can't
get another degree.
I already have a doctorate, so what do I do?
Use that thought to write a short, spoken word poem called, The Me, I, See.
February 27th and 28th at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church here in Philadelphia, we will
be attempting the world's longest history lesson, where our topic will be 5,000 years
of African and African American history.
Nice and simple.
Are we ready?
We'll take you back to the past and bring you all the way up to the present in 33 hours.
The Me, I, See, and Maya Angelou, we both have strong voices.
Awesome.
Ashe, can I hug your baby?
Teaching, it will be me, Dr. Anita Lewis, teacher at University of Houston Clear Lake,
and a retired K-12 educator.
Let's take a look at some of these world changers.
I'm Gwen Ebron, a retired school teacher and counselor.
When she called and asked me would I be interested in doing the Guinness World Record attempt,
I said, oh, of course, yes, I'm game.
These two lovely ladies who have been here all night, when I see their strength, I see
me.
Aw, thank you.
For the last couple of months, we've been making sure that we can stay awake and alert.
Guinness only allows us five minutes of a break for every hour that we teach.
It will be continuous.
Yes.
If I am breaking, she's teaching.
Yeah.
So you're thinking for 33 hours.
That requires at least two witnesses and two timekeepers and the engaged student population.
We will then take all of the evidence, and we will submit it, and then they will analyze
it to verify our record.
Africans resisting through warfare.
When relocation and diplomacy didn't work, they fought.
When we were doing our research and trying to narrow everything down, we couldn't really
do a whole week.
I won't say it's not on my bucket list.
Revolutionized genres like jazz, soul, rock, and hip-hop.
Every lesson that we teach will have an engagement activity designed for students to get into
the lesson and to apply it.
Because you hear and you forget, you see and you remember, but you do and you understand.
Who am I?
I wrote the color purple.
I was orphaned.
We're trying to educate, empower, and elevate.
So as part of our lessons, we do at the end of each lesson have an affirmation.
I speak boldly.
They can say, okay, having learned this, I now can move forward in this way.
That my voice and art transformed the world.
So I want them to see the brilliance that's in their DNA so that they can understand that,
yes, this might be hard, but it's in my DNA to try a little bit harder.
I can do this.
As a teacher, that makes my heart sing.
Okay?
All right.
Let's move on.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are done.
