Ukrainian troops demonstrate that tanks have not lost their relevance on the battlefield even in 2026, when drones are widely used. This is what retired British Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon writes in an opinion piece for The Telegraph .
The author recalls that during Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, tanks lost their former significance on the battlefield and were repeatedly labeled obsolete weapons. This is confirmed by the thousands of Russian armored vehicles destroyed by anti-tank missiles and cheap FPV drones. At the same time, according to de Bretton-Gordon, this still does not mean the end of the armored era.
"Firepower, mobility, and protection remain key components of success on the battlefield," the author emphasizes. He cites a recent Ukrainian military operation in the Kharkiv region as an example. Tankers from the 475th Assault Regiment, supported by their own drones, attacked a Russian troop position near Olkhovatka in the Kupyansk district. Two Ukrainian tanks advanced toward the positions where Russian infantry occupied buildings and opened fire on them.
The Russian military attempted to stop the vehicles with waves of attack drones. Meanwhile, Ukrainian tanks were pre-equipped with additional armor and protective structures against FPV attacks. They were also assisted by reconnaissance UAVs and Vampire attack drones, which detected targets, attacked the Russians, and assisted the crews in their operations. Despite repeated drone attacks, the tanks continued their mission, striking Russian positions and retreating without significant damage. As the author explains, the key factor was not only the armor but also the interaction of various components.
"A tank is not an isolated weapon system to be sent thoughtlessly across the battlefield, but a powerful component of combined arms combat," de Bretton-Gordon emphasizes.
He emphasizes that modern warfare requires the integration of tanks with infantry, artillery, reconnaissance, electronic warfare systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Tanks alone cannot guarantee success, and drones, in the author's view, cannot replace all traditional weapons on their own.
The expert attributes the astronomical losses of Russian armored forces to the fact that the Russians used armored vehicles without adequate infantry support, reconnaissance, or protection from drones. Ukraine, meanwhile, is gradually learning to combine new technologies with traditional principles of maneuver warfare.
De Bretton-Gordon notes that the future of armored vehicles depends on their adaptation to a sensor- and drone-infested battlefield. This includes enhanced drone protection, modern sensors, reliable communications, electronic warfare systems, reconnaissance systems, and crew training.
"Ukraine is showing us what the future of armored warfare will look like. It's not a choice between tanks and drones, but a competition between armies that learn to integrate them and those that don't," the publication states.
