SURGERY AWAY ROTATION AT LAS VEGAS + A PLUS MEDICS SUTURE KIT GIVEAWAY.
Hello everybody and welcome to today's video.
Today's video is going to be sponsored by A Plus Medics.
They went ahead and sent me one of their suture kits
and asked me if I could show it to you.
I get a lot of questions from you guys asking
how do I practice my suturing
and if I know of any great suture kits.
Well luckily I tried this one
and I think it's pretty much one of the best
that's on the internet right now.
So it looks like this.
It comes with a really nice container
to hold all your things.
And inside you get all of the tools on the left.
You get extra scalpels.
You get a whole bunch of different suture types.
And then right here is a silicone pad
that you can practice your suturing with.
As a lot of you guys know,
I am interested in becoming a surgeon.
And one of the biggest reasons that I decided to become one
is because of the hands-on component of it.
Just being able to use your hands
and solve people's ailments in real time
is probably one of my favorite aspects.
And of course there's the medicine side
that you still have with general surgery,
but you have the addition of this hands-on component,
which I think is particularly just, I don't know,
satisfying, interesting, fun.
It makes the hours go by and I don't know.
I just can't imagine doing
or wanting to do any other type of medicine.
Because it is hands-on,
it is particularly of the essence
that you have some basic hands-on skills
like being able to suture.
So for instance, this is a basic running suture
that many physicians have to be able to do.
I think that having a kit like this
to be able to practice your skills
is very vital to anybody who is interested
in improving basic suture skills.
And then another really important tool
that you can practice with your suture kit
is your hand ties.
Here is our one hand tie.
And they have videos in the package that you can use
so you don't have to look at rookies like me do it.
You can look at an actual physician
teach you how to do the basic knots and sutures
that you would need as a surgeon.
So that is a two hand knot
and then you can practice things like your one hand knot,
like so.
And these are all skills that come with lots of practice.
So that's kind of the key to doing really nice
and pretty knots is being able to practice all the time.
Basically everybody could use a suture kit to practice.
I'll leave a link to the A Plus Medics suture kit

And now let's get back to the video.
Hello everybody.
Welcome back to my channel.
It has been some time since I've posted.
I know, I know.
I have been on my fourth year finanza
of traveling everywhere,
trying to get residency programs to accept me.
So I'm back in my apartment after a whole month
of being at an away rotation
at Baylor Scott & White in Temple, Texas.
That program was amazing.
I'm looking for a program that has a really good environment.
It's very open, educational,
but you know, everyone's having a good time.
I feel like that's how I learned the best.
I had a fantastic away rotation there.
I didn't want to vlog my first away rotation
just because I didn't really know
what I was doing at the time.
And I just wanted to focus on like finding my way
through how to be a successful away rotation student.
But this is my second away rotation.
So now I feel a little bit more comfortable
vlogging the process with you guys.
We're going to be heading to Las Vegas, Nevada
in the United States.
It's an 18 hour drive from where I currently live in Texas.
So I'm driving.
I have packed all my things, as you can see.
I've literally been in my apartment for two hours
because I just got here from Temple
and I have to go immediately to Las Vegas
because I have to be there by Monday.
It's Saturday and it's an 18 hour drive.
So you see how that's a little bit difficult.
So come along guys,
as we go to a surgery away rotation in Sin City.
Now, what are away rotations?
It's basically like doing a class at a different school
because you want to go to that school.
So you're trying to meet the new faculty
and the residents, get to know them,
let them get to know you.
And if you're a good student, hopefully,
and show good work for them,
they are theoretically more likely
to want you to go to their school.
So this is me going to the Las Vegas residency program
and saying, hi, I'm America.
I'll be here for a month.
I'm going to show you everything I got.
You're going to show me what you got
and hopefully we can, you know,
I can work here in the future.
Now, why Las Vegas?
Because I'm not from Vegas.
I'm from Texas and my whole family's from Texas
and I've never lived outside of it.
While I definitely like the program,
but I'll tell you about the program later on
as I get to know it.
But one thing for sure is I really, really love the city.
I've been there every year of my life since I was born.
I was one week old when I first went to Las Vegas.
We even have a place, like a condo in Las Vegas.
So that's how often we visit.
I also like the magic shows.
I like the strip.
I like the malls.
You can even go skiing in Las Vegas
because there's mountains and there's places where it snows
and Las Vegas is like a desert.
So it's just, there's suburbia
and then there's wild party town central.
It's just everything you could want in a city all in one.
It's my favorite city probably in the whole wide world.
So I do want to end up living in Las Vegas one day
and maybe this is a chance to live there.
So anyways, we have a long, long drive.
I will periodically update you
with this very, very long expedition.
Also guys, I don't know if you've noticed,
but I'm all here by myself.
There is no Calyx.
He is with my mom right now.
My mom's babysitting him.
So he's safe and he doesn't have to endure
the 18 hour drive and I don't have to endure it with him
because he hates car rides.
All right, everybody.
So we are here.
I am in Las Vegas right now.
It is like 60 degrees, blue skies.
It is feeling amazing here.
I have this entire condo all to myself for the next month.
So I am pretty excited right now.
Let me go ahead and give you a tour.
So here we have the kitchen.
I already went grocery shopping,
so I have a few things lined up.
And I have a fridge with a lot of beer in it.
I don't drink, that was already in there.
So this is the kitchen area.
Then we have a little dining room area over here.
Living room area.
There is a balcony right here.
And then if you come this way,
there is a bathroom and a bedroom over here.
My makeup, my stuff, and my closet right here.
I have packed my clothes, packed my lunch.
All righty, guys, so now it is time to get into bed.
And I'm going to be working on a paper
and then I'm going to be going to sleep,
waking up at five o'clock in the morning
and then starting my first day of my surgery rotation
at the University of Las Vegas.
So, so excited.
I will see y'all in the morning.
Goodbye.
Good morning, everybody.
Let's go ahead and get ready.
All right, I am all ready.
We were supposed to be wearing scrubs today,
but I don't have any.
I'm winning my badge and my internet access today.
So today we dress up in business clothing
and not comfortable pajamas.
I mean, scrubs.
♪ This time we're gonna get funky ♪
♪ Funky ♪
Okay, we're all packed and ready to go.
And we're 40 minutes early, so good stuff.
Let's go ahead and head to school.
It is 60 degrees right now, so it's pretty cold.
And it's September, so it's kind of cold for Las Vegas,
which is supposed to be a desert.
All righty, guys, we are here.
There's free parking available at this hospital,
which is fantastic.
And that's the building that I will be working at.
Comparatively speaking to the bustling
live action of Las Vegas,
it has relatively little traffic,
which is something that means a lot to me.
Largest hospital available for quite a distance
in this area of the country.
So they even have their own burn center
and level one trauma center.
And the reason that's important
is because really large hospitals
tend to have a large volume of patients
and different pathology to see.
And the more patients and diverse pathology that you see,
theoretically will make you a more prepared physician.
Okay, we are here at the main entrance.
And as you can see in the background,
you can see the strip of Las Vegas.
Hey guys, so I'm currently still here.
We just did a whole bunch of administrative paperwork stuff,
but now it's time to go to the OR.
So super excited.
All righty, guys.
I have officially been here for 12 hours.
We had an amazing case that I've never seen before.
So just the diversity of surgery just never ends.
Now is a good time to go home
and read about all the cases tomorrow
and also have a food coma.
Okay guys, so I am now at my condo.
I just finished looking over my new patients
and writing down their vitals and their HPIs
and whatnot in my book
so that when I go see them tomorrow, I know who they are.
And now I have to review the case
that we will be doing tomorrow.
That's what I'm gonna do for the rest of the night.
And then I'm going to sleep.
Hey guys, so it's a new day.
I had to wake up a little bit earlier this morning
because now I have patients that I have to round on.
So now I'm gonna go to the school,
check their vitals and whatnot, check on my patients.
And then I'm gonna go meet with my resident,
tell them about them.
And then we have a long, long operating day today.
Right now I'm in the call room.
We're about to go to the OR.
So I'm just watching some anatomy videos
about the fibula right now.
So part of doing away is it's getting to know the city
and seeing if it's something that you can vibe with,
get along with.
So right now I'm visiting one of their malls.
This is the Las Vegas Outlet Mall and it's huge.
And basically a whole bunch of your favorite stores
at discount prices.
So two hours later, I saw a whole bunch of fabulous,
wonderful, luxurious things that I still wanted
and still could not afford despite the outlet discount.
And all I left was the three pairs of novelty socks.
Okay, guys.
Fascinating night of reading about pressure sores,
looked up some patient information
and have it all ready for morning rounds tomorrow.
And then it's time to go to bed
at the wonderful time of 9.51
because that's just who I am these days.
I just finished with an OR case.
We have like four OR cases today.
Just going to enjoy some packed lunch,
sandwiches and some other things.
I don't know what's in here.
And a diet Dr. Pepper
because that is my source of caffeine and fuel.
All right, guys.
Finished with another case.
More of pediatrics, which is always fun.
I think that there is something important
that I want to share about way rotations.
Something that I've been dealing with a lot.
I've been on, this is my second away rotation.
So I haven't really been home with friends or family
in over a month and I won't for another month.
And that's really, really difficult.
I like to think that I'm someone who's pretty confident
in themselves and their personality.
And I'm very proud of who I am,
which is why I'm able to post these videos on YouTube
because I don't really care too much
about what people think of me because I like me.
But I'm kind of weird in that I really, really care
about what people think about me
in like the professional setting.
And obviously when you're on an away rotation,
it's basically your chance to show the program
that you desperately want to go to.
Hi, do you like me?
And that's really difficult to deal with
every day for a month.
Constantly worrying, what do you think about me?
Do you like me?
Constantly having to show the best side of yourself
and not necessarily being fake or untrue to yourself,
but having to always show the best persona of you
and worrying what people think of you at all times.
And that can be really, really draining
if you have to do that every minute of every second
of every day for a month, or now two months.
Okay guys, so it is my final week of my away rotation.
It would be way too long if I filmed the whole month,
also pretty difficult.
So we're just going to do the last week.
Right now I am working on a presentation about myself
because I have to introduce myself to the faculty,
all the faculty, and they're gonna be in suits.
And I have to stand in front of the room
and give a presentation about my life.
I also have to talk about a surgery topic.
So I'm a little bit nervous about that.
This is what I have so far.
It's talking about being from Houston,
my mom and dad, my family, and Calyx.
We have to talk about a unique hobby,
which usually is very difficult for people to come up with.
Luckily, I have a lot of unique hobbies.
One of them being YouTube, and I don't know how.
Somehow every away rotation I go to,
people know I have a YouTube channel
before I even have the chance to tell them.
So I'm going to talk about that and how it kind of happened.
As you guys probably know,
I started making YouTube videos a long time ago,
back in 2010.
Some of y'all probably weren't even alive back then.
Then it kind of progressed into videos
that I was just kind of doing for fun
until finally I made a video
about my first day of medical school.
And you guys know the rest.
I've been making videos,
vlogging about my life as a medical student ever since.
Years later, I'm still in medical school,
but luckily I am near the finish line.
I have work tomorrow morning.
So right now I'm going to take this time
to look up some patient information
and what surgeries I'm going in tomorrow.
I usually try to read about the surgeries
I'll be going into.
All right, guys, just got done looking up
patient information for tomorrow
so that I know what's going on with them.
And I'm able to go to their surgeries
knowing what's going on, which is very important.
And then after this, I'm going to sleep
and I will take you with me in the morning.
All right, good night, everyone.
Okay, everybody, it's five o'clock in the morning
and I have to get ready to go.
So I'm in my scrubs and time to go around on my patients.
And then after that, we start our surgery.
So come along.
All right, everybody, just arrived at the hospital, 5.20.
So time to go check on the patients and write their notes.
What the surgery is about.
So just enjoying a soda before we go back,
which I should go back right now.
Hello, everybody, currently it is 11.11 p.m.
And me and somebody who you would like to be anonymous
are working on these PowerPoints
that we're presenting tomorrow.
Hello, everybody.
So I just finished with my presentation.
I dressed up in a black dress
and tried to look super nice for the faculty
I was presenting for.
And no pressure though.
It went super well.
Some people have been saying nice things, so that's good.
Now I have to go change into my scrubs
because we have some surgeries today.
It's a bit sunny and very beautiful today outside.
Gotta love the Las Vegas weather.
All right, all done with OR pieces today.
Time to get out and, oh God, no,
don't tell me I walked around all day like that.
All right, anyway, peace.
So I had a wonderful day at work.
I have plenty of energy pretty late at night.
It is a Tuesday, so of course,
there's nothing to do on a Tuesday.
Wrong, it is Las Vegas,
so you can literally do anything all the time.
I booked a show for some Cirque du Soleil show tonight
just by myself.
Let's go have some fun and do one of the best aspects
of wave rotations, explore the new city.
Everybody is Las Vegas.
It is filled with lights.
This is New York, New York.
It's a casino that is supposed to be exactly like New York.
These are the inside of the hotels.
They're very, very bright and elaborate.
Everybody, today is the last day of my wave rotation.
So today, or right now, I am going to visit my patients,
see how they're doing, report on that with the team,
go to a few surgeries, and then I have an interview today,
which is why I'm dressed up.
So after that, I get to go home
and drive all the way back to Texas.
Currently in the bed.
Trying to fix where my mask messed up my foundation.
All right, guys, so I'm all ready for my interview today
with the program director of the wave rotation
that I've been at for the past month.
Really awesome thing about wave rotations
is that usually the program will give you an interview,
and I'm not really sure if they screen people
who apply to wave rotations.
I'm not sure, but I think that in order
to get the wave rotation, you have to be a student
who is qualified enough to interview, I think,
because a lot of them offer an interview
while you are doing a wave rotation,
so you don't have to come back later into it.
Like, I'm already here in Las Vegas and have a suit,
so interview me while I'm here kind of thing.
I'm not really a big fan of just tense situations,
but I have hung out with the program director a lot,
especially in surgeries,
and everyone here is very approachable, to say the least.
I have to interview with another faculty member later on,
and he just wants to interview between cases over a donut,
so that kind of gives you an idea of the level of stress
that these faculty members are going to place on me.
I'm just eating pizza, making excellent health choices
at a hospital cafeteria,
and just awaiting for my interview time,
which is in, like, an hour, but I'm early,
so I'll just wait.
All righty, guys.
Goodbye, Las Vegas.
I am going home.
I would say it's my last day on my way, and I finished it.
I had my interviews today, which went fabulously.
Gotta say goodbye to my residents and my fellow med students,
and I'm having a splendid day.
Now to go home, pack, and have an 18-hour drive home.
Officially all moved out.
Everything is gone.
So now, just turning off the lights.
Got the road trip snacks, and I'm ready to go.
My legs hurt so bad.
That was 24 hours of being in this car.
Home, I'm home!
Hello, bed.
Oh, bed, I've missed you so.
Calix and my mom will be joining us tomorrow.
He was staying with my mom for the past two months,
so soon everything will be back as it was,
with me and Calix back in the old grind.
Woo-hoo!
All righty, everybody.
So I have unpacked completely,
and my whole apartment is back to the way it used to be,
so now it is time to sleep, but not for too long,
because we have something to do in the morning.
Oh, goodness, it just never stops.
Goodnight, everybody!
Hi, everybody, so I just presented my poster.
It is on the floor now.
It is so big.
And now, heading home and going to sleep.
Finally home from my poster presentation.
I'm going to take a nap and eat these three cheese sticks.
My mom's coming in a bit, so I will sleep until then.
So, until then!
Oh my gosh, guys.
Two hours later, they're here.
Say goodbye to the camera.
